A family favorite recipe for Calico Beans mixed with a variety of beans, ground beef and bacon then tossed in a sweet and tangy sauce and baked until hot and bubbly.
Summer picnic season is right around the corner. I can’t wait! My family and I are anxious to get to our summer camp where we enjoy family weekends around the campfire and enjoying the great outdoors.
This recipe for my Mom’s Calico Beans is a family favorite. It’s a great recipe to have on hand to make for any of your outdoor picnics, potlucks or family reunions. My mom has made this recipe for years for many gatherings. It is always a hit!
These Calico Beans are made with pork and beans, garbanzo, lima and kidney beans along with ground beef, bacon and onions and tossed in a delicious sauce.
Once you try these you’ll never want to serve plain old baked beans again.
- ½ pound ground beef
- ½ pound good quality thick cut bacon, diced
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 1 (16 ounce) can pork and beans, undrained
- 1 (15.5 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (15.5 ounce) can lima beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (15.5 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- ¾ cup light brown sugar
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
- Pinch of black pepper
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Cook ground beef, bacon and onions in a large skillet over medium heat until beef is cooked and onions are tender, about 10 minutes
- Remove from heat and drain excess fat.
- Add beans and beef mixture in a 3 quart casserole dish.
- Stir in brown sugar, ketchup, salt, mustard, vinegar and pepper and gently until combined.
- Cook for about 40 minutes until hot and bubbly.
